Donate Used Machines for Use as Medical School Equipment

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Hospitals are extremely expensive places to run. Not only does a hospital need to be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, administrators also need to pay for round-the-clock specialized personnel and the cost of the extremely-high monthly energy bills. It is no wonder that some hospitals and clinics simply cannot pay for those high costs month after month. If it is not a busy hospital, it is common for administrators to close down a wing or the hospital altogether. There are still many pieces of medical equipment, however, that are in working condition when this happens. In most cases, these machines and extra supplies are refurbished and sold to another hospital or clinic as used medical equipment. However, other places decide to donate this equipment to medical schools.

It is incredibly important that there is medical school equipment available for the future doctors of this country to use! As potential patients of these future PhDs, we need to make sure that these individuals are trained property in school so that they are ready to practice once they receive their degrees. Used medical equipment is the perfect tool on which medical students can practice their developing skills.

Medical equipment includes everything from wrap bandages to electrocardiogram machines (EKG machines). Doctors need to know everything from how to apply bandages to stop bleeding to knowing how to interpret basic machines. Most medical doctors start out in the emergency rooms of hospitals where they are on call three nights a week. These individuals need to know how to make decisions in a split second, no matter how tired they feel. Therefore, when their nerves and focus have almost run out, they need to know how to do the most essential basics without even thinking. All the practice they have in medical school will help them become the best doctors they can be before they even make it into the work force.

If you have access to used medical equipment and supplies and would like to help the future doctors of America, or any country worldwide, you should look into donating them to a medical school. The gift of education is one of the best gifts you can ever give!

Major Types of Medical Imaging Equipment

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Many of us are familiar with the most common type of medical imaging equipment, X-rays, but did you know that there are many different types of imaging machines that help doctors diagnose health issues? The advances in medical imaging equipment are amazing, and an example of some machines you might not know as much about are electron microscopes, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI’s), ultrasounds.

Electron microscopes are a great tool for physicians and clinicians to get a better sense of what’s going on at the basest level. Because electron microscopes can magnify at a level of 2,000,000 times, they are used in anatomic pathology, which identifies orgnalles within a patient’s cells. Although immunhistochemistry, a new method has taken some of the focus off of electron microscopy, this essential medical imaging equipment is irreplaceable for the identification of immotile cilia syndrome, the diagnosis of kidney disease, and many other things.

Most of us have heard of MRI’s, but what are they exactly? Simply explained, a magnetic resonance imaging scanner uses the power of magnets to polarize and excite the hydrogen nuclei in water molecules that are present in all human tissues, and this then produces a detectable signal which can be interpreted to create images of the body. This type of medical equipment is especially useful for identifying soft tissue problems, such as those in the joints or the brain, because X-Rays work more specifically for harder tissues like bone.

Another medical imaging machine you may have heard of are ultrasounds, especially for pregnant women looking at their unborn babies. It is have very broad uses in medicine however, including imaging the abdomen, heart, breast, muscles, tendons, arteries and veins. How does it work and what do doctors use it for? Medical ultrasound instruments use high frequency broadband sound waves in varying degress in the megahertz range to produce 3-dimensional images. These ultrasound images do not have the anatomical detail of images produced by an MRI machine, it is widely used because it is appears to not have any adverse side effects and is safe to use. Ultrasounds are also relatively inexpensive as opposed to catscans or MRI’s, so they continue to be a staple in medical offices and hospitals.

These are just three examples of the medical imaging equipment available today. Technology continues to advance and there are sure to be many more exciting developments to come in the world of medical equipment and supplies, and you can expect the level of healthcare to commensurately increase.

Wheelchairs and Other Medical Equipment

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Wheelchairs are a common piece of medical equipment but most of us are unaware of the different types available on the market today. If your are ever in the unenviable position of needing a wheelchair for yourself or a loved one, you must be aware of the different types that are out there. Who would ever imagine there could be such a variety?

First of all, there are the manual wheelchairs that are powered by the user himself or by someone else who pushes the chair for him. These chairs are very light and easy to maneuver and are recommended for everyday or occasional use.

The next on the list are electric wheelchairs, which have a motor and are ideal for someone who must use a wheelchair for most of the day. They are fairly expensive, costing around $3000 or more, and are not recommended for outdoor use as most will not stand up structurally to the rigors of outdoor use.

Sports wheelchairs are available and can be designed for any number of sports. It is advised that you buy a sports specific wheelchair to get the most enjoyment out of your sport.

Believe it or not, you can even buy wheelchairs designed for dogs with mobility problems, though I have yet to see a dog being pushed in a wheelchair by a person.

Some things to consider before buying a wheelchair is whether it is designed for indoor or outdoor use. You might need to buy two if you plan to do a lot of outdoor travel in the wheelchair. You need to consider the size and the weight it can hold. If you plan on car travel, the wheelchair should fold up for easy storage in the trunk. If you are planning to buy an electric wheelchair, you will need to know where the power source is located. An electric wheelchair with a rear wheel power source will usually move faster than ones with a front wheel power source. Will you need a wheelchair that reclines or one with removable armrests? Some wheelchairs have adjustable footrests. Last, but not least, you need to find out if it has a warranty and for how long.

Like any other type of purchase you make, do your research and shop around before you buy. If you put some thought and consideration into what you need in a chair and how much you will use it, you will be much happier with your purchase in the end.

What to Expect From Your Home Medical Equipment Supplier

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Home medical equipment, also known as durable medical equipment, refers to those items that patients need in order to care for themselves outside of a health facility such as a hospital. These items are intended for use by a non-professional medical caregiver, such as a family member or friend. Therefore, they are designed so that everyone can use them for extended periods of time.

Examples of medical equipment intended for home use are items such as respirators, wheelchairs, commodes, nebulizers, air purifiers, diabetic shoes, and many more. In order to qualify for one of these machines, one needs a prescription from a doctor. This prescription is necessary for the majority of these pieces of equipment; however, minor items can be obtained without a note from your doctor. These items include walkers or canes.

Once your doctor writes a prescription, he or she may recommend a home medical equipment supplier. If they do not, you will have to do some research of your own but suppliers are not difficult to find. Medical equipment supply companies come in all sizes and can be found all over the country. Two of the largest suppliers such as Walgreens and Invacare can be found in the most highly populated areas but several smaller businesses exist in even the most rural counties.

Once you have found a supplier that you feel will work best for you, you need to provide them with your physician’s prescription. If they cannot fill it, they should be able to point you in the direction of a company that can. A home medical equipment supplier has several obligatory functions to perform when they enter into an agreement with a patient. They are required to provide proper delivery and setup of the equipment, train the patient and his or her caregiver on how to operate the equipment, and provide 24-hour contact information in the case of an emergency. Your supplier also has to provide periodic maintenance service and contact you if anything changes concerning your insurance.

If your doctor does not give you a recommendation, make sure that you do your research thoroughly to find a good refurbished medical equipment supply company. If you want to be well taken care of, you need to find a company that is there to help you, not their own pocket books!
