Packing an Emergency Kit in Your Camping Supplies

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Camping is a great way to bond with family and friends, away from the distractions of the city. However, leaving the city behind also means leaving all its conveniences. When packing your camping supplies, make sure to bring some necessary items that can come in handy during emergencies.
First and foremost prepare a waterproof container to store your emergency supplies in. Also make sure that this container can be firmly closed and will not easily open in case it gets dropped or shaken around. You would not want to be groping around your bag for the spilled contents during an emergency. A good example would be a thick Ziploc bag or an airtight food container.
One of the first things you should pack is flashlight together with batteries and some for extra. Other than the obvious purpose of providing light around the campsite when needed, a flashlight can also act as a beacon for when you get lost and need to be located. A whistle will also serve a similar purpose, and this should likewise be a staple in your emergency kit. It’s small, lightweight and ultra-useful that there should be no excuse not to bring it along in any camping trip. A great example, remember how Kate Winslet’s character used this in Titanic to call for help? Exactly.
Always keep an extra set of waterproof matches in your camping supplies. If for some reason your lighter gets drenched and a flint is nowhere in sight, this can just be your life-saver, especially in places where the temperatures drop drastically at night. When in the wilderness, fire is not only useful in providing warmth, but also keeping away wild animals. Predators such as grizzlies and big cats are a very real danger especially when you’re in the mountains. Even the small ones can wreak havoc with your things, the last thing you would like to find out in the morning is that your bag has been stolen by some wily forest creatures.
Equally important is to bring along rain ponchos. You do not want to get drenched in the wild especially when proper medical care is not within your reach in case of hypothermia or fever. You should also make sure that a pill box is with you in every camping trip containing medicine for allergies, headache, fever or any other ailments hat you feel your friends/family may suffer while outdoors. Likewise, make sure to bring bandages and disinfectants to stave off infection and keep a wound clean in case of accidents.
For practical reasons, a number of other materials should also be included in your emergency kit such as scissors, a Swiss army or pocket knife, and hardy strings. A compass is also an essential when venturing out into the wild.
A water bottle should also be included in your camping supplies, along with water purification tablets so when you run out of safe drinking water, you can still play it safe. Last and not least, non-perishable food should also be brought along such as high-calorie energy bars, beef jerky or similar items.

You’ve put a good deal of time and effort into planning your emergency supplies, tools, evacuation and disaster relief plans. All of that planning will do you no good if you are not organized. If your house’s heating system goes out on the coldest night of the year and you can’t find your solar blankets and sleeping bags, then all that pre-planning is wasted. It is absolutely imperative that you mark all of your emergency supplies and make sure they are portable and ready to go for anyone in your household who needs to use them.

The following tips for emergency supplies storage ideas should help you get it all under control. First let’s consider your trauma kits and first aid kits. Hopefully when you purchased them they came with a case or backpack style container to hold all of the various bandages and creams and splints and other supplies. However, if you purchased your medical supplies separately, it is important that you purchase a case to hold them all in one central, easy to find location.

Backpacks and plastic art supply cases are perfect for holding all of your first aid needs. Remember to label your supplies so there is no confusion when they are needed. You may want to consider a heavy duty rubber 55 gallon tote on wheels as the ideal emergency supplies storage ideas. Use backpacks and duffle style roll bags to parcel out supplies by category. Another good idea is use a five gallon bucket with a lid.

First aid supplies, sleeping linens, heat generating equipment and emergency shelter rations should all be separate and labeled and marked. You want to be able to open the lid to a bucket or drum and grab the kit you need for the specific emergency at hand. Purchase the right storage system and this will be easily accomplished. It is frustrating when you need something and cannot find it.

Now let’s drop an emergency like a natural disaster on you and you’re hunting for flashlights in the dark. This is not an ideal scenario, especially when you’ve spent so much time and effort planning out your emergency supplies. Take a little bit more time for planning your emergency supplies storage ideas and when it comes time to use those supplies, they’ll be easy to find, readily available and you will breathe a huge sigh of relief. Being prepared, and ready for all types of emergencies, is always the best situation.

You need specific supplies and tools to do your job right. Thankfully, since this is the Internet, you have a lot of different options in front of you as far as what is available, what options and styles you can choose from and what kinds of prices you are going to be looking at. Since this is the Internet, you probably chose to shop online for things such as EMS gear, EMT supplies and emergency medical supplies because you have been hearing about all the benefits.

First off, this is really convenient. It’s all about saving time and buying items quickly – even from your home or office. Secondly, if you need a specific product, even something that is rare, you can find it online. You simply need to find the right company to work with. And lastly, the biggest reason people shop online? It’s probably because of the low prices. Even for supplies that are high-end, you will find price drops for online supplies versus online supplies. As far as variety goes, here are a few items you can buy online.

- Urological Catheters: A lot of the items you can find are going to vary by type of use as well. In this instance, the Urological Catheters are usually used in hospitals, nursing homes and hospices. You have a few different styles available such as latex, external, intermittent, reusable, FOLEY and even a touchless option.

- Tracheotomy Care: These are obviously used for surgical operations on the neck to obtain a target air passage through an incision in the trachea. These are executed by paramedics, veterinarians, emergency doctors and operating surgeons. Both surgical and trans-cutaneous techniques are now widely used in the medical field. Options include suction catheters, pumps, humidification, replacement parts, tubes and tracheal care and cleaning.

- Surgical Supplies: This is a HUGE category to choose from. You can pick from any style of products, services, items, types of doctors, types of surgeries such as cardiovascular, liposuction, micro surgery, dermal, etc. If anything this is the one category where you might have a lot of trouble finding what you want, but that isn’t because of the minimal products available, it’s because of the LARGE number of products available. Most sites will have a surgical section which will then allow you to narrow down your choices – which is very helpful in this instance!

- Specialty Wound Care: These specialty wound care products are designed specifically for burns and cuts. They can also be used for drainage, absorbing blood, composite dressings, etc. You have everything from compression bandages and foam dressings to Hydrocolloid Alginate dressings and Sodium Chloride dressings available to you. Some of these are going to simply be used to “cover” up and aid in the compression of the area where the wound is. While others will actually be used to keep the pain at a minimal degree. I have also seen Hydro-cortisone wound care as well.

- Respiratory: Various respiratory problems can be used with these products such as obstructive conditions, restrictive conditions, vascular disease, infectious or environmental diseases. Disorders of these diseases are oftentimes treated by a pulmonologist, but products such as irrigation, asthmatic care and oxygen therapy is oftentimes used by hospitals and EMT professionals. You can also find accessories in this section as well such as compressors for Nebulizers and masks for CPAP and bi-level ventilation.

If you are an EMS, EMT or other health professional, know that you can get quality supplies – no matter the type, style or function it is used for, and you can find them quickly and easily
